Luom Thi Cao's Obituary
Luợm Thị Cao, 92, of San Diego passed away peacefully on January 28, 2025, reuniting with
her beloved husband, Tam Trần, who preceded her in death in 2023. She was the marvelous
matriarch of the Tran/Mach family, a loving mother, doting grandmother and great-grandmother
who emanated joy to everyone she met. All who knew her will forever remember her iconic
infectious laughter.
The beautiful, formidable Luợm Thị Cao was a loving force among her family, friends, and
community. She was born in Cần Thơ, Vietnam on August 24, 1932. Though she lost her
parents at a young age, love and family was instilled in her as she helped raise her younger
siblings. After marrying her devoted husband, Tam, they raised 7 children in a time of struggle
and strife in Vietnam. The war’s end painfully separated them for many years as they bravely
sent their children to America in search of better lives, while they stayed behind with their
youngest. The family was finally reunited in San Diego, California, in 1987. Here Luợm made a
new, hopeful life and home among them that saw her enjoy many travels, hit many slot
machines, and build rich social bonds in her community.
Luợm was a fearless, ever-curious traveler and roamer, always willing to experience new
places, be among crowds, see new sights. Every grandchild’s graduation or celebration of any
kind would see her there, ready for hugs and beaming for photos. She loved her grandchildren
and their children so much, so purely. Even in her final days the sight of the babies would bring
a smile to her face.
She had the most distinct and infectious laugh that echoed through every space that she
entered, an instant illumination wherever she went. Once you’ve met her, you don’t forget her. If
she loved you she would relentlessly feed you, affectionately pinch you, and grace you with that
joyous, piercing laughter that always compelled you to laugh, too. She enjoyed simple
pleasures, like her morning coffee with Ritz crackers, daily walks around the neighborhood, and
watching her favorite video series on VHS tapes. She filled so many bellies with her delicious
comfort foods, and enjoyed making her famous Chinese sausages and charcuteries to share
with everyone. Her favorite cooking partner was her husband, and together they made their
cozy home an inviting hub of family gatherings and feasts.
Luợm’s light was one of the warmest and brightest, and it will continue to shine through the
legacy that she leaves in all her children, 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Luợm’s
gentle spirit and unwavering love will be eternally cherished and deeply missed, and her
memory will forever be honored in the hearts of her beloved.
Luợm Thị Cao was preceded in death by her mother and father; her loving husband, Tam Trần,
their sons, Mạch Nam and Trần Thành, and grandson Trần Hà Hiệp.
Luợm Thị Cao is survived by her sons: Phát Kim Trần, Nam Trần, Sánh Trần, her daughters:
Liền Ngọc Trần and Lan Ngọc Trần.
Her Grandchildren: Trinh Mạch, Việt Mạch, Larry Trần, Lân Trần, Hân Trần, Vyvy Trần, Steven
Trần, Phụng Trần, Danny Trần, Alan Trang, and Geena Trang
Her Great-grandchildren: Lana Mạch, Alexander Trần, Elizabeth Trần, Jaden Choy, Kenzie
