Luz Ramos' Obituary
Luz Ramos, cherished sister, aunt and godmother went to heaven on April 26, 2023. She was deeply loved and her demise is viewed as an indescribable deep loss for many.
She was born February 18,1953 at the Naval Hospital in San Diego. She was the second child for Antonia and Angel Ramos, her big sister is Lupe Chavez. Lucy had 3 siblings that followed her. Miguel Angel “Michael” Ramos, Juan Raul “Johnny” Ramos, and Lydia “Lillie”(Ramos) Sapien. She was “Tia Lucy” to 10 nephews and nieces, great aunt to 4 more including Aunt/Godmother to Lydia’s children Ariana Luz Sapien and Emilio Alejandro Sapien.
Lucy attended schools in Barrio Logan.Burbank and Logan elementary schools and Memorial junior high and San Diego High school where she balanced her 12th grade education with employment. Her work ethic can be described by many who knew her as the girl who painted the entire interior of her grandmother’s house at age14 to buy her own bicycle and preferred school clothes.Even younger, my mother told the story of the child in kindergarten who when given a nickel for milk money preferred to deposit her nickel in a piggy band and took a carrot for her snack.
Lucy was industrious and demonstrated a “Can Do Attitude” in all she undertook. She was an independent woman and was a fierce advocate for social justice. She was employed in San Diego for the Navy and eventually worked for them in Long Beach. She commuted to San Diego at least every weekend to care for her mother (93) until her passing in 2019.
Lucy loved biking, art and music, camping with her pals at Carpinteria. She loved to read. She always had a James Patterson book to read before sleep. Movies were a fun outing she enjoyed as well. She was a practicing and devout Catholic and attended St Joseph’s Cathedral although Our Lady of Guadalupe held a special place in her heart as her childhood parish.
Lucy returned to reside in Barrio Logan when the pandemic came and she tele-worked from there.
Lucy was diagnosed with a rare aggressive Cancer the fall of 2023 which she fought courageously and bravely until her demise. She remained optimistic and faithful until the end.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks and gratitude to her care team at MD Anderson Scripps. The painful and sad journey we experienced was greatly facilitated by the Advanced Illness Care team at Scripps Hillcrest. We thank them especially for their excellent care, guidance and genuine empathetic support to Lucy and caregivers Lydia and Lupe.
There are no words to express our loss. Lucy was funny and kind, she was an excellent role model. There was no one like Lucy. If she was a friend to you she was loyal and had your back in all or any circumstance. We are only consoled with the knowledge that she no longer has pain and all the symptoms provoked by her illness. We embrace and cherish her memory and take comfort that she now rests in heaven and in peace with her mother Antonia Ramos who left us in 2019 and with her compadre and brother in law Alex Sapien who left us Jan 27, 2023.
Lucy is survived by her sisters Lupe Chavez and Lydia Sapien, her brothers Michael Ramos and John Ramos, brother in law Julius Chavez and sister in law Jeanette Ramos and numerous nieces and nephews. Beloved Uncle (Tio) Ramon Licon and dearest (Tia Lola) Dolores Acosta and numerous cousins.
