Margaret Woolman Bowman's Obituary
Margaret Woolman Bowman was born on May 12, 1938 in San Diego, CA. Her parents were Robert Hart Woolman and Lawrie Macgregor Woolman. She was the first of two children. She attended Grant Elementary School, El Cajon Junior High, Grossmont High School, San Diego State University and University of Vienna. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies. After graduation she became a teacher of English and U.S. History at Hilltop High School. After teaching, she raised a family and became an Enrolled Agent practicing before the IRS. She lived in San Diego, La Mesa, Jamul, Japatul and Lake Havasu City. She was married to Calvin Bowman on May 4, 1974 at the Long Waterman House in downtown San Diego.She was a direct descendant of the Mayflower and can trace that relationship through 15 family members. She had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. She was from a long line of Quakers and held to that belief. She had many special lifelong friends. She was involved in several organizations including Kappa Alpha Theta, Mayflower Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Juniors and Sisters of Social Service Auxiliary which support Camp Oliver, Society of Enrolled Agents, & the Fine Arts Museum (now San Diego Museum of Art) where she served for many years as a docent. Her family first moved to San Diego in 1886. Her ties to the Victorian era were strong: she and her brother were the last family members to own the Sherman Gilbert Home before its move to Heritage Park and the Long Waterman Historical home currently on First Ave in San Diego. Her family had close connections to the Marston family in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s, and helped to preserve the 1915 buildings at Balboa Park. She spent much of her childhood summers in Julian in a log cabin and exploring nature.Words that describe Meg are loving, elegant, giving, organized and energetic. Her most important events in her life were her first job working at her dad’s dry cleaning business, adopting, her marriage, and raising her family. Her favorite hobbies were: hiking, genealogy, art history and traveling (All 50 States!). She created beautiful environments in every place she lived. She is survived by her husband, Calvin, children including Monique Petersen, (Hans)Tammy Royer (Mike), Melinda Brown (Buddy), grandchildren Josh (Lexi) Royer, Clayton Royer, Cory (Kayla) Brown, Kara (Sean) Allen Kameron Brown, great grandson Kade Allen, brother Bill Woolman, her aunt R. Margaret Macgregor, and nieces Marie Cuvadar and Annette Woolman. Private services are pending.
