Sandoval, Margarita Plascencia's Obituary
Margarita Plascencia Sandoval passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on April 1, 2025. Margarita went by many names. Ama, Abuelita, Mashgato, Bebep, Uita, Doña Mago, Jefa- the list goes on. Each name encapsulates a different side of her, an affectionate reflection of her nature in another person’s eyes. On June 12, 1946, she was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco to parents Ignacio Plascencia and Pascuala Gonzales, the youngest of their 4 children. As a child she was much like the adult woman we all knew, fierce and capable, yet good-humored and gentle when necessary. She always had a love of music, and even sang to attract customers when her family sold fruit. At just 14 years old, she married Benjamin Sandoval, who sang to her when he asked her to marry him. Together they had 9 children, 4 girls and 5 boys. There were times during their marriage when her husband was not present, and she filled the role of both mother and father, working tirelessly to provide for her children. Her partners in parenting were her trusty Chancla and a good, sturdy stick. If they ran too fast, a small rock would do. In pursuit of a better life for their family, they immigrated and settled in Jamul, California, and later San Diego, where their legacy only grew. Her family multiplied over the years, gaining 28 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In her later years when she had more time to herself, she took immense pride in her home. Inside it was always warm. There was always something bubbling away on the stove to fill the bellies of her visitors, whether they were hungry or not. She loved her garden, especially her Guaje trees. She grew flowers, harvested fruit, and raised chickens and doves, all of which brought her immense happiness. Almost as much happiness as shopping. She loved to buy new outfits for family parties and pose for pictures. We’ll never forget her smile. Her hugs. Her advice. Margarita was many things to many people. A confidant, a good laugh, a mother, grandmother, friend. She will always have a special place in our hearts. In the moments when you remember her, find joy in remembering who she was to you.
