Marjorie L. Young's Obituary
Marjorie was born to Ufa M. Grant and Raymond S. Grant on December 9, 1924 in Winslow Arizona. She spent the early years of her life growing up in this small town. Her father ran a small store where she spent many happy hours. After the Great Depression hit, her family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Her father started his career working for Regina Wine Vinegar during this time. His career would take him on frequent extended travels. Marjorie finished high school in 1942. She went on to complete 2 years of junior college in the Phoenix area. Marjorie moved to San Diego, CA along with her mother in 1944. It was here that she met and fell in love with Preston Young. Preston was serving in the Navy during WWII and was stationed in San Diego following completion of Boot Camp. They were married in 1945 in San Diego and moved to Los Angeles following Preston’s discharge from the Navy in 1946. Marjorie worked at Bank of America and Preston attended a business college. After finishing up business school in LA, they moved to Sacramento, CA. Here, Preston started his career with the CA State Board of Equalization. They moved back to San Diego circa 1952 and lived in Kinsington for a short period. They purchased a home in Normal Heights on Cromwell Place in 1953. Their first child, James, was born April 22, 1954. Their second child, David, was born June 18, 1955. The rest of the neighborhood was also in the Baby Boomer frenzy as well. Cromwell Place and Cromwell Court were very busy with children growing up and playing in the homes, the streets, and the canyons. Marjorie was involved with the PTA and scouting organizations of her children. Not to mention hosting many afternoons of games, late night billiards and ping pong marathons. The family also acquired a cabin on Mt. Palomar. This provided many weekend getaways for our family… and unfortunately, a badly mangled toe for Marjorie, during construction of a rock retaining wall. Preston retired from his career with CA BOE in 1983. The remainder of the 1980’s saw an increase in Marjorie and Preston travelling. Sometimes they drove, sometimes they rode on Preston’s Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. The 1980’s also saw the birth of 2 grandchildren to each of their sons. Two daughters for David and his wife Lu Ellen: Jennifer and Alexandra. Two sons for James and his wife Deborah, Preston, and Jameson. Unfortunately, Marjorie became a widow in January of 1992 when Preston lost his struggle with leukemia. In the years that followed, Marjorie was able to enjoy many happy times with her sons and grandchildren as they grew. Her sons were lucky to have jobs that allowed them to drop by for lunch several times a week. Marjorie continued to live in her home until a few years after an unfortunate accident which resulted in a hip fracture. She then resided in a very nice residential assisted living facility in the Del Cerro area. She was under care by Sharp Hospice. She passed away peacefully on May 27, 2016.
