Matuu Genesis Aimalefoa's Obituary
In Loving Memory of
Matuu Genesis “Kenese” Aimalefoa
February 23, 1962 – February 22, 2026
Matuu Genesis “Kenese” Aimalefoa, 63, of San Diego, passed away on February 22, 2026, just one day shy of his 64th birthday.
Matuu, lovingly known as Matt, was born on February 23, 1962, in San Diego, California, to Aimalefoa Maiava and Tumua Aimalefoa. He spent his early years growing up in Imperial Beach before moving with his family to American Samoa for three years — an experience that remained a meaningful part of his identity.
At first glance, Matt could appear tough, unapproachable, and maybe even a little intimidating. But once you got past that exterior, you discovered someone warm, funny, and very personable — a true Islander. Matt made himself known by his booming voice and contagious laugh. He loved joking with people, giving out nicknames, and telling stories that always left everyone entertained. With his dramatic pauses, funny faces, and gift for conversation, Matt could strike up a conversation with just about anyone.
Matt married the love of his life, Susan, on May 27, 1989. Together they raised two daughters, Brittany and Kourtney, whom he loved unconditionally and was endlessly proud of.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Matt played football, baseball and basketball for many years and surfed in his youth. He was a devoted fan of his hometown Chargers and Padres. He coached his daughters Brittany and Kourtney, as well as his niece Caitlin, in softball — always their biggest supporter.
Matt, also known as Mateo by the thrift store staff, was a loyal employee at UCP for many years and was well liked and respected by his colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan; his mother, Tumua Aimalefoa; his father, Aimalefoa Maiava; and his sisters, Fa’apopo Aimalefoa and Evotia Tuiteleleapaga and brother Pele Jack.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Brittany (David) and Kourtney; his cherished grandchildren, Leilani, Finn, and Ivy; his beloved niece Caitlin (Mikey) and nephews Ryan, Kenny, Radley Jack, and Maiava, who held an especially special place in his heart; his sisters Nerisa and Gail (Sene); and his many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Although we are heartbroken by his loss, we are comforted in knowing he is resting in peace and reunited with his beloved Susan and family members who went before him.
Tofa soifua, until we meet again.
