Melissa Cecilia Jones' Obituary
Melissa Cecilia Hanzy was welcomed into the world by her parents Alfred Hanzy and Ruth Ward Hanzy of Houma, Louisiana on February 5, 1926. She was the second of six children. She spent her formative years in Gibson, Louisiana and Beaumont, Texas where she met Albert Collins Jones, the love of her life. Albert joined the Navy and Melissa relocated to Los Angeles, California to be with her mother Ruth and her siblings. She then relocated to San Diego to be with her husband, Albert. Melissa graduated from San Diego High School. She chose to become a Caretaker for 55 years for Mr. & Mrs. Walter C. and Betty Zable of Cubic Corporation.Melissa’s spirit was lively and she spoke her mind often. She was very social. In her most active years, she was a devoted Usher at St. Paul’s, a member of the United Methodist Women (Esther Circle), a member of the Silbeys Club, the Birds of Paradise Social and Charity Club, she was an Eastern Star and member of the Lydia Chapter No. 118 in San Diego, California, and a VERY avid bingo player. She loved sports, and was a San Diego Padres and Chargers fan. She loved to cook and her favorite dish was Louisiana style “Gumbo.”Melissa’s most covenant honor and achievement was being a good wife, mother and grandmother for 69 years, including seven years as a licensed foster boarding parent with the Children’s Home Society of California. Melissa was a cherished member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church since December 18, 1955, over half a century.On the morning of May 5, 2019, Melissa made her final transition to eternal life with GOD. Melissa was preceded in death by her husband Albert C. Jones; her parents, Alfred and Ruth Hanzy; three brothers, Frank, Burney and Lee Pete Hanzy and one sister, Elmer Hanzy Oliver. She is survived by her three daughters, Nena L. Salaam (Haneef), Gwenette N. Goodwin (Andre), Lynette R. Hayes (Richard); one brother, Lozano L. Hanzy, her companion and pet, Bingo Jones and seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and great loving friends.
