Melvina McRoy Travis' Obituary
Mrs. Melvina McRoy Travis began life’s journey September 30, 1932 in Sacramento, California. She was the second of four children born to the union of Walter and Sallie Cora Poole McRoy. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. The family moved to Fresno, California in 1936, where she received her formal education.Melvina attended, graduated and received her diploma from Edison High School in 1950. She then moved to Oakland, California to attend the Barbering and Cosmetology Program, where she received her Cosmetologist License. She had many jobs over the years, first working as a Cosmetologist, Nurse’s Assistant, then, working her way into the government. She started out in the government with the Social Security Department, in administration. Mel relocated to San Diego where she joined Calvary Baptist Church under Pastor S.M. Lockridge. After many years she moved her membership to St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church of God in Christ. She met and married her husband of 34 years, Walter W. Travis, on January 7, 1972. She continued her works in the government working for Naval Ocean System Center (NOSC), where she retired after 39 years of service, retiring as a Contract Specialist and Buyer for the Government. Melvina enjoyed her retirement, her family, and friends to the fullest. She was preceded in death by, Husband Walter Travis, Father Walter McRoy, Mother Sallie McRoy, Sister Octavia, Daughter-in-Law Sandra Buford, Brother-in-Law Robert Snowden Sr., and Brother-in-law William A. Anderson. She leaves to cherish her memories: two sons Anthony S. Works, (Sharon) of Washington State and Richard M. Buford of Virginia, Brother Johnny J. Freeman Stockton, California, three Sisters Geraldine Snowden of San Diego, California, Ramona Anderson of Columbus, Ohio, and Loretta Qualls (Edward) San Diego, eight grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
