Murray Lander's Obituary
Murray Lander was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 26, 1922. He
was the youngest of 6 sons born to Abraham and Ida (Schneer) Lander. He grew
up during the depression which taught him valuable lessons about life and the
value of money.
After high school Murray started attending college but when WWII began he
went into the Army at the age of 20. He proudly served for 3 years with the 150th
Armored Signal Company. He was a private first class and earned two Bronze
Stars.
Murray met his future wife Sylvia in the neighborhood where they grew up
and they married after the war, in 1946. After their two children were born they
moved out to Seaford, Long Island. As the partner in an appliance repair business,
Brooks Washer Service, Murray was a hard worker and good provider. He was extremely handy around the house, good at carpentry, electronics, a real Mr. Fix it, he
did it all. In addition to all the practical projects he built a large, realistic working
model train display in his basement. Besides all the wonderful home improvements inside, he also took great pride in the care of his yard and garden.
In 1975 Murray and Sylvia sold their house and moved sight unseen to San
Diego. Once here Murray got a job as a building maintenance supervisor for the
Seville Condominiums in La Jolla. He worked there until his retirement at the age
of 66. Murray’s wife Sylvia passed away in 1983. He met and married his second
wife, Ruby, in 1984 and they were happily married until her passing in 2015.
After retirement Murray volunteered for Kaiser driving people to their doctor appointments. In his later years Murray enjoyed, and was very good at working
crossword puzzles. He was an avid Bingo player with his friends at Waterford
Terrace, where he was living. Murray was a big Charger and Padre fan. A favorite
pastime was watching them on TV and he never left the house without wearing one
of their caps. Murray was a big pet lover, throughout his life cats, dogs, and birds
brought him much joy.
Murray was a casual, low key, man of integrity with a strong work ethic. He
created a good home environment where his family felt welcomed, protected, and
loved. He helped many in his immediate and extended family both emotionally
and financially.
Murray is survived by his two children, Beth Lander and Arthur Lander, his
daughter-in-law Lilian, his two grandsons, Daniel and Ian, and 3 great grandchildren. He is also a beloved grandfather to the Yansch and Hernandez families and
an uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Murray passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.
He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
