Nelson Da Costa Pereira 's Obituary
San Diego resident and Limoeiro native Nelson da Costa Pereira passed away peacefully while sleeping at home on January 24th next to the love of his life and wife of 66 years. He was 91 years young.
Nelson was born on March 13, 1928 in the small town of Limoeiro, Brazil to Ermírio da Costa Pereira and Olga Fernandes da Costa Pereira. He was the third child and eldest male of nine siblings. In 1953 he married Marilourdes Soeiro da Silva and had three children, José Ermírio, Luiza Olga, and Rita de Cássia.
In 1971, missing his mother and siblings, he decided to emigrate to the United States of America. In 1973 his youngest child, Stenio, was born in San Diego. He retired in 1987 and moved back to Brazil with his wife and son. In 1993, he moved back the US. In 1997, he was appointed Honorary Consul of Brazil in San Diego by the Brazilian government where he served the Brazilian community until 2010 when he retired a second time. He lived his remaining years traveling and enjoying the company of his wife and family.
Nelson was a loving father, father-in-law, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a true renaissance man having reinvented himself several times throughout his life. A man of singular integrity and dedication to his family.
He is survived by his wife Marilourdes Soeiro da Costa Pereira, four children, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and dozens of extended family members and friends.
A mass in his honor will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 10:00 am, followed by a funeral ceremony at 12:30 pm at Greenwood Memorial Park.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his name with the American Heart Association.
