Nicholas John Comitas' Obituary
Nicholas John Comitas, affectionately known as “Nick The Greek” or “Mr. C,” 81, died unexpectedly February 22, 2020, at Tri-City Medical Center, Oceanside. He was born in his family’s home on December 30, 1938, in Pittsburg Pennsylvania, the son of John Lucas and Eustratia “Helen” (Zaferiou) Comitas.
Nicholas graduated from Mira Costa High School, Class of 1957. After serving his country in the military as a member of the United States Army, he attended several colleges before graduating with a B.A. from Sacramento State and a teaching credential from University of Southern California. Later, he earned a Masters in Manpower Development from University of Redlands.
In 1967, he married the love of his life, Susan Bleemers. Later they settled in Hemet, where Nicholas taught State Requirements and Drivers Education for 29 years at Hemet High School. During his early years of teaching, he also coached Cross Country, Basketball, and Track and Field. After retirement, Nicholas and Susan relocated to Carlsbad. They have been longtime believers of the Greek Orthodox faith and attended St. Constantine and Helen’s Greek Orthodox Church since 1994.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 52 years, Susan, are his daughters, Eustratia “Tia” Hubbard (Michael) of San Diego and Nicole Thrombley (Edward) of Turlock; and three grandchildren, Zoë and Toula Hubbard, and Harrison Thrombley. Nicholas was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who was loved dearly and will be greatly missed.
A private burial service was held on March 5, 2020. Those who wish to remember Nicholas in a special way may make gifts in his memory to Wounded Warrior Project (support.woundedwarriorproject.org) or Shining Cross Academy Preschool at 3459 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff by the Sea, CA 92007.
