Norma Jean Hallowell Ronk
February 12, 1930 – August 19, 2020
Mrs. Norma Jean Hallowell Ronk (née Holbrook) of La Mesa, California, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at the age of 90.
Norma was born to parents Harvey and Helen Holbrook on February 12, 1930 in Niles, Michigan. She grew up the youngest of three sisters. At the age of 12, Norma and her family moved to Ventura, California, where she attended Ventura High School and Ventura Junior College. In 1953, she married James Carlyle Hallowell. The couple was married for 24 years and had three children. In 1979, she married Henry “Hank” Ronk of Oak View, California. She worked for the Ventura County Tax Collector’s Office until her retirement in 1995. Hank developed Parkinson’s disease and passed away in 2004. In 2006, Norma relocated to the San Diego, California area to be close to her son and his family. In 2010, she relocated to Hillsboro, Oregon to be close to her daughter and her family. Finally, in 2016, she relocated back to the San Diego area and lived her remaining years at a senior living home in La Mesa, California.
Norma was a homemaker for most of her life. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, The Women’s Club, and Eastern Star in the Ventura, California area.
Norma is survived by her two sons, James Alan Hallowell of Crawfordville, Florida and Ted Brian Hallowell of San Diego, California, and her daughter Sue Carol Hallowell Happel of Beaverton, Oregon; 8 grandchildren, Kristyn Joy Wolfrom Hallowell, Ryan James Hallowell, Natalie Kate Hallowell Saur, Amy Colleen Hallowell Wick, Thomas James Hallowell, Megan Beth Hallowell Mitchell, Matthew Ryan Happel, and Evan James Happel; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Hank, her parents Harvey and Helen, and her sisters Phyllis Mae Holbrook Otto and Virginia Ann Holbrook Davidson.
Cremation took place on August 26, 2020, at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, inurnment and a memorial service will take place at Ojai United Methodist Church when it is possible to do so. The family is grateful for condolences, flowers, and donations.
