Porfiria Nocon's Obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Porfiria (Puring) Carandang Nocon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, auntie, commadre, and friend. She passed peacefully at her home in San Diego, CA at the age of 102. She is predeceased by her husband Generoso Franco Nocon and her son Generoso Carandang Nocon. She is survived by her loving and devoted children; her sons Ed Nocon and wife Onnie Nocon, Andy Nocon and wife Pam Nocon, her daughter Catalina Carandang Nocon and Bill (Emong) Burke, her daughter Rose Hermanson and husband Phil Hermanson, and her sons Rick Nocon, Rey Nocon and wife Molly Nocon, and Robert Nocon and wife Ashley Nocon. She is also survived by her thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, sisters Gloria Suyao and Consolacion (Nene) Marquez, brother Auriano Carandang, and many beloved nephews and nieces.
Puring was born in Cuenca, Batangas, Philippines, and immigrated to the United States in 1951. She lived a dedicated and meaningful life as a military spouse, raising eight children as she and her husband relocated numerous times with the United States Navy before settling in San Diego in 1959. She was an accomplished seamstress, active in St. Columba’s Parish, loved bingo, gardening, and walking the steep hill to and from the nearby stadium several times a week.
Puring’s purest joy and most appreciated accomplishment was supporting and celebrating family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed family traditions such as hosting big holiday gatherings and rooting together for the San Diego Padres in a home full of conversation and laughter. She loved cooking her secret Filipino recipes for a crowd of loved ones. Her impossible-to-duplicate fried rice, lumpia and pancit were the family favorites. Her love will forever embrace her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and all who knew her.
