Obituary: Rachel Garcia (January 1, 1926 - June 1, 2023)
Rachel Garcia, peacefully entered into rest on June 1, 2023, in San Diego, California. She was born on January 1, 1926 (New Year’s day), in Arizona to Augustine Durazo and Pasquala Martinez Durazo. Rachel was the oldest of five children, preceded in passing by her siblings Hilda, Carmen, and Alfonso (aka “Ponchi”), while her brother Tony continues to cherish her memory.
Rachel's life was marked by hard work, love, and devotion to her family and friends. She worked for the renowned San Diego cannery industry, leaving a lasting impact on the community she served. Rachel exchanged vows with her beloved husband, Daniel Garcia, at the historic Immaculate Conception Church in Old Town San Diego. Together, they embraced the joys and challenges of raising five children: Jose Tellechea, Matias Garcia, Ambrosio Garcia, Cecilia Stanley (+), and Abram Garcia.
Tragically, Rachel became a widow and found herself as a single mother. Determined and resilient, she embarked on a new journey of independence. Rachel learned to drive, enabling her to provide for her family. She joined the school district and worked as a dedicated cafeteria food service worker at El Toyon Elementary until her retirement. Rachel's unwavering commitment to her children's well-being and her work ethic were a testament to her strength and perseverance.
Family was at the heart of Rachel's life, and she treasured her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She adored her seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment spent with them. Rachel's love and wisdom will forever remain etched in their hearts.
