Reginald Rolando "Reg" Mosby's Obituary
Reginald Rolando Mosby, was born in Houston, Texas on July 24, 1952, from the union of Cleophas Mosby of Garrison, Texas, and Valma Elise Stein Mosby, of Mt. Enterprise, Texas, who predeceased him in death. He was the youngest child of their union.Cleophas Mosby, trained at Montford Pt., North Carolina, and was one of the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he fought in the Pacific during World War II. Cleophas met Valma when she returned to Mt. Enterprise after her first semester in college. They married and shortly after their first child, Sharon Bernadette (Mosby) Majors-Lewis, was born on June 21, 1948, they moved to Houston, Texas. Deborah Fredene Mosby was born to their union on July 23, 1950.The family moved to San Diego, California in 1955, and Reginald attended Sherman, Martha Farnam and Chollas Elementary Schools, Gompers Junior High, and graduated from Lincoln High School. He went on to receive an AA degree from San Diego City College.Reginald was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years and was a member of The Rock Church.Reginald was a tall (6’4”) striking and handsome man who was blessed with many admirers who drew the attention of his affection, but ultimately he was married only once, to Ruby Willis Berryman. One son was born of that union on June 8, 1991, Reginald Ryan Mosby. Reginald’s older son is Ahmad Rashad Toussaint. Ahmad, and his wife Carrie, blessed Reginald with three grandchildren, Saliyah, Anakin, and Malakai. In addition, through his relationships Reginald acted as a father figure to Sandra Love’s children Vicky and Everett; Sequita Mitchell Gaines’ children Niko Thompson, and Yakub Mitchell, and Corrina Sisterson’s daughter, Faith. He loved each of them like they were his own.“Reg,” as his friends and relatives called him, could sell anything! He was an independent thinker and an incredible “salesman” who, among other things, sold fire alarms, used cars, and real estate, including properties in Fairbanks Ranch, an exclusive enclave in San Diego County. He loved the theater, dancing, music, and sports and was an avid runner, skater, bowler, golfer, and swimmer, who also enjoyed target shooting.Reg was very health conscious and enjoyed eating healthy foods and worked out regularly. Unfortunately, Reg was diagnosed with a devastating condition called Lewy Body Dementia, an incurable disease that rapidly destroys both the mind and body.Reg knew what lay ahead of him, and yet he met his condition with unwavering resolve. He valiantly fought the effects of the disease to his last breath, but succumbed to it on September 19, 2016.Reginald leaves behind countless friends and relatives on both the Stein and Mosby side of his family tree who will undoubtedly tell many anecdotes and stories about him for many years to come — how he sold nothing but limousines for a period of time, started a magazine called Changing Times, or opened his own furniture store. But, perhaps Reginald’s legacy is most personified by the fact that for 64 plus years, he lived his life his way; and during his time with us he never did anything he did not want to do. Everyone should be so blessed.
