Reynaldo Libunao Caneda's Obituary
Reynaldo Libunao Caneda, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and proud Navy veteran, passed away at home surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in the Philippines to Esteban and Julia Caneda, surrounded by 11 brothers and sisters, Reynaldo grew into a man defined by service, devotion, courage, and an unwavering love for those he held dear.
Reynaldo faithfully served in the United States Navy for 20 years, a career he approached with pride, discipline, and deep gratitude. He exemplified the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment both in thoughts and actions.
Following his military service, he continued to dedicate himself to his community through 21 years with Naval Public Works. Whether working on engines aboard Naval carriers, repairing heavy machinery in the navy shipyards, or tinkering
under the hood of a car, Reynaldo’s hands were skilled, steady, and always willing to help. He was the kind of man who could fix anything—if he couldn’t, he’d build it himself. Family members and friends still cherish the stools, folding tables, and other creations he crafted with talented skill and diligent care.
At home, Reynaldo was the heart of his family. He was a guiding presence—wise, steady, and always ready with advice when asked, comfort when needed, and a joke when laughter was the best medicine. He also made sure his family was always safe. He always stood up for them and would fight anyone that threatened the family. Aside from being a strong protector, he was equally loving and affectionate. He loved chasing children around while pretending to be Darth Vader, or jokingly say, “I will bite you,” only to pull his grandkids close for a kiss instead.
His humor was as much a part of him as his strength. Reynaldo was a devoted husband to Alberta Toledo Caneda, who was his partner in every chapter of life. He often said, with a smile, “Always listen to your mom—even if she’s wrong,” a line that became part of the family’s treasured memories of his good-natured wisdom and enduring love. Their favorite song was Unchained Melody. When Reynaldo was away out to sea, this song gave them comfort when they missed each other. “I'll be coming home, wait for me, wait for me. God speed your love to me.”
He was the proud father of Ruel Toledo Caneda, married to Kristen Lu, and Joy Toledo Caneda, married to Catherine Asuzano Monta. His grandchildren—Julian Jessa Mahal Caneda-Santos, Alex Generoso Rey Caneda-Monta, and Russell Lu Caneda—were his greatest joys. Shopping with Julian, buying anything she wants. Making funny animal noises with Alex and saying you are handsome like me. Making large buildings out of Legos with Russell and playing together in the RV and backyard. He cherished every moment spent with them.
Reynaldo enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life meaningful: John Wayne westerns, Sean Connery’s James Bond, and singing along to Elvis Presley. His favorite song, Elvis’s rendition of “I Did It My Way,” was a fitting reflection of his life—a life lived with conviction, courage, and heart. Reynaldo leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and strength. He will be remembered as a protector, a hard worker, a craftsman, a joker, and above all, a family man who lived life his way and gave all of himself to the people he loved. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts
