Richard Austin Hutchings' Obituary
Richard Austin Hutchings Sr. of Santee, California passed away peacefully on December 7, 2023. He was born on May 8,1931 in Chicago, Illinois to Percy Austin Hutchings and Mary Pauline Webb. He was the 2nd child of 5 children and the only boy. He attended Lakeview Jr. High until he left Chicago in 1946 to come to San Diego to live with His Aunt Stelle and Uncle Harry (Hutch). He attended Woodrow Wilson Jr. High where he graduated and then went to Hoover High School where he played and excelled on the Junior and Varsity baseball team. He graduated in 1949 and went back to Chicago for a short time to work. Richard joined the Army and served during the Korean War, he received an honorable discharge in 1952. He married Edith Mary Morton on July 2, 1955. They lived in San Diego until they moved to Santee in 1961 where he lived until his passing. He was a salesman by trade. He sold drafting machines, and was very successful. Richard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was very involved in different callings. He was very optimistic, always had a joke to tell, He loved his country and loved his family. His hobbies were crossword puzzles, he did 1 or 2 puzzles daily, he believed it kept his mind sharp. He loved playing billiards and was quite good. In his later years he enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and knew every episode by memory. He was a true blue Chicago Cub fan! He was so happy and excited when the Cubs won the World Series!!
RIchard is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary of 56 years, her passing in 2011, son Richard (Rickey) who passed in 1976 and Sister Billie Jean Rundle who passed in 2016
Richard is survived by 3 sisters, Sonja Davis, Karen Mark, and Lauren Burdett. Children - Mary Diane Hartpence (Larry), Talia Howry (Dennis), Jim Hutchings, Tamara Hill (Russ), Lillian Schimpf (Randall), Paula Austin (Donald), and Karen Moreau (David). 28 Grandchildren and 45 Great Grandchildren.
His love and humor will be missed.
