Richard L. “Dick” Shick, Sr. passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025. He was born in
Akron, Ohio, September 7, 1931, to Perry M. Shick and Katherine Z. (Danneker) Shick.
Dick graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School. He attended University of Akron (PreEngineering), San Diego City College (A.A) and San Diego State University (Civil
Engineering). In 1950, Dick enlisted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served
in the 24th Engineering Construction Group in Seoul, Korea. He received his honorable
discharge in 1954 as a Sergeant.
Dick was a devoted American Legion Member for 64 Years. He was a Staff member and
the Director of California Boy’s State for 50 Years. His legacy is the formation of the
California Boy’s and Girl’s State Foundation. He worked for the County of San Diego for
36.5 Years with a legacy of Managing the Construction of several Regional Centers
throughout the County of San Diego as a Deputy Director of County Department of
General Servies, Architecture and Engineering Division. Dick was a Professional Civil
Engineer. He held many titles with the County of San Diego as he worked his way up to
the Deputy Director position before his retirement in 1991. He was also an avid San Diego
Padres and SDSU Aztec Fan. He loved watching his Granddaughter play League, Travel,
High School, and College Softball.
Richard, Dick, Dad, and Poppy was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, GreatGrandfather, Bother, Uncle, and Godfather. He is preceded in death by his parents Perry
and Katherine Shick, Step-Father Roy Euga, and Brother Eugene Shick. He is survived
by his Wife of nearly 70 Years, Dolores (Montes) Shick, Son Richard L. “Lee” Shick, Jr.,
Daughter-in-Law, Christine Shick, Granddaughter, Erin (Shick) Canton, Great-Grandson,
Hudson Lee Canton. He is survived by his Sister, Phyllis (Shick) Dempsey and loving
extended families.
Funeral Services will be held April 9, 2025, at Greenwood Memorial Park, Garden Chapel,
4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113 with Internment to follow at Miramar National
Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122. Greenwood Viewing at 10:00 AM,
Service at 11:00 AM, Procession from Greenwood to Miramar by 12:30 PM, and Burial
