Robert Lawrence Edwards' Obituary
Robert Lawrence Edwards was born to Robert & Dorothy Edwards (née McGruder), the second son in a lively family of six. He was born on October 29, 1960 and took pride in being a native of San Diego, CA. Robert Lawrence, also known as “Lala,” has always loved the thrill of life and shared his sense of adventure with his brothers and friends.
As a child, he had a unique way of persuading those around him to join in on his escapades - from joyrides to brushfires, to sprinting through glass doors and inspiring an artful decoration of butterflies, he was quite the explorer. Aside from the time he ran away from home for the day, he also enjoyed sitting on the stool watching his mother cook and chatting about life. Robert was an avid drummer in the marching band at Helix High School and eventually joined the Army after graduation.
During his 20 years of active duty service, he traveled extensively, completed paratrooper and medical training, ultimately serving during the Gulf War. Robert obtained a B.S. in Education from Wayland Baptist University and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.
Most importantly, Robert was blessed to be the father of three beautiful children and was grateful for the opportunity to be the very best father he could be. He was proud to speak of his children and all of their accomplishments and cherished the visits he had with his grand-children. Being their “Pop-pop” was one of his favorite roles.
After retiring, he continued his career in the medical field, specializing in orthopedic surgery where he eventually accepted a position at Triangle Orthopedic Surgical Center in Raleigh, NC. He was extremely passionate about his work and the people he worked with. Robert enjoyed fishing, golfing, music, and attending sporting events with friends.
He was lighthearted and had a joyful soul. As so many can attest to, Robert lit up every room and his smile and laughter will be cherished. His sudden death on October 30, 2022 has been a great loss. He spent his final days camping with his family in his hometown, driving his mother around in a golf cart, singing, laughing, enjoying sports, and befriending everyone around him. He will be missed by his loving family and friends, but always remembered in their hearts.
Robert is survived by his children, Jasmine, Robert Jerome, and Breanna (married to Joshua Schaffer). His grandchildren are Ava, Chloe, and Jack. He is also survived by his mother, Dorothy, and brothers, Michael, Eric, and Paul. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Edwards.
A viewing will be held on Monday, November 14th from 5pm to 9pm at Greenwood Memorial Park Mortuary. A funeral service to proceed on Tuesday, November 15th, at 12pm, followed by a repast at the on site reception hall. All friends, family, and community members are invited to attend.
