Robert Denton Hammond's Obituary
March 6th 1948- July 26, 2017 Robert Denton Hammond (AKA Bob or Bobo) was born March 6th, 1948 to Thomas Denton Hammond and Cornelia (Connie) Waite Hammond in Altadena California. He was the youngest of four children. In 1958 his parents moved the family to El Cajon, CA where he attended Bostonia Elementary, Greenfield Jr. High and Granite Hills High School, graduating in 1967. Bob enlisted in the Army before graduation and shipped out immediately after. He served with the 101st Airborne spending 13 months in Vietnam as a Helicopter Crew Chief, door gunner. Bob was always extremely proud of having served his country. He was a true patriot in every sense of the word. After returning from Vietnam, Bob began a career in construction and married his best friends sister and former girl next-door, Sandy “Jones”. They had two children, Kyle David and Jaime Lynn . Baseball was his passion and he was very involved with Santee American Little League, coaching Kyle’s teams from T-Ball to Majors. Moving onto High School Football, he was very involved in assisting the coaches including videoing all the games. Bob was West Hills High School’s first Booster Club President and was instrumental in raising funds to get the football stadium built. As a General Contractor, the owner of RD Hammond Builders, Bob took great pride in the custom homes he built and remodels he completed- always ahead of schedule. He was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. The biggest joys in Bob’s life were his 5 grandchildren. He was so very proud of them. After retiring in 2014, Bob & Sandy moved to the home they had purchased as their vacation home in the Foothills east of Yuma, AZ., where he enjoyed boating on the river and golfing on the golf course in their backyard. Bob’s 4 ½ year battle with cancer took him home on July 26th, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Thomas David, Sister Elizabeth (Beth) Crampton. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Sandy, Son Kyle David (Jodee) Southwell, Daughter Jaime Lynn (Brett) Carpenter, 4 Granddaughters & 1 Grandson, all of San Diego, Brother John of Minnesota and several nieces and nephews.
