Rodney Van Hunter's Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Rodney Van Hunter aka “Life of the Party” and my best friend. My brother was born on November 4, 1961 in San Diego, California. Rodney remained in San Diego until 0239am December 14, 2020. My brother was the second child of six siblings of Jessie Van Hunter and Dorothy Ann Hunter. Rodney attended Valencia and Horton Elementary, O’Farrell Jr. High and graduated from Morse High School in 1979. After that, he went to San Diego City College.
He loved sports and played baseball there. Rodney received his Welders’ certificate and worked for Hyspen Welding for fifteen years then worked at Alcoa Aluminum for four to five years. He was also a DJ on the side: "Rod-Dog in the house!!!!” - is what he would say walking into the room and family gatherings; always smiling and laughing, he was the life of the party!
Rodney was a member of St. Stephens God in Christ Church. He was also involved with Teamsters Union and Steel Workers Union. The most important event in Rodney’s life was San Diego Softball Tournament Championships.
Rodney had a spiritual encounter that changed his life, gave him realization of himself. The five words to describe Rodney is INNSIGHTFUL, SPIRITUAL, GREGARIOUS, PEACE SEEKER AND EVEN TEMPERED.
Some of my brother’s favorite songs were Amazing Grace and Reggae Woman.
Survivors are our mother Dorothy Hunter and his siblings Gary Hunter, Rachel Ladson, Kent Hunter, Tracy Hunter; fiancé Susie Ryan and a host of aunties, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
