Collins Roosevelt Munns' Obituary
Collins was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 27, 1940, the only child of Roosevelt and Ollie Munns. In 1959 he married his first wife Carolyn Hughes. That marriage ended in 1963. In 1968, he married Dorothy Mitchell Alexander. On December 13, of this year they observed their 50th Anniversary.Collins enjoyed a long, successful career in the field of Social Work Administration. He graduated from Cleveland State University in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Psychology degree. In 1970, he added a Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University. From 1974-1977, after his move to California, Collins obtained formal training in Mental Health Administration from Pyramid Systems. From 1971 to 1978 Collins was an Associate Professor at San Diego State University School of Social Work in addition to his work with the County of San Diego.In his 26 years with San Diego Mental Health Services, Collins advanced from Regional Manager to Assistant Deputy Director to Acting Mental Health Director. After his retirement in 1997 from the County of San Diego he joined San Francisco Mental Health Services.Throughout his career, Collins was an active member of many organizations including the national and local Black Social Workers, The Black Federation, San Diego Coalition of Mental Health, California Black Health Network and the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services.Many of these organizations presented him with awards and tokens of appreciation. The highest honors being the 1997 Proclamation from the County of San Diego and in 2000 ,the Certificate of Honor from the San Francisco Health Commission.Collins played racquetball, learned to scuba dive, enjoyed bicycling and loved to drive sports cars. Collins and Dorothy saw many parts of the world together including 3 trips to Africa.Collins Roosevelt Munns, age 78, passed away in his home after struggling several years Lewy Body Dementia. Preceded in death by parents Roosevelt & Ollie Munns, former wife Carolyn Ladd, grandsons Gregg Lee & Adrian Myron, cousins Jessie Harris and Clyde Munn, and brother-in-law Stanley Mitchell.Survived by spouse, Dorothy Munns; children, Eugene Munns (Mary Munns) of Tampa Bay, FL, Deanna Alexander-Myers (Edward Adams) of Santee, CA, Marie Munns of Columbus, OH, Laia Munns of Columbus OH, Deirdre Myron (Woodrine Myron) of La Mesa,CA, Destiny Roxas of San Diego, CA; and 8 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; cousin, Larry “Butch” Dennis and childhood friend David McKinney, both of Los Angeles, CA; 3 sisters-in-law, 3 brothers-in-law; caregiver, Maria Alvarez; and many extended relatives from the Munns and Dennis families.
