Roy Lee Underwood Jr "'s Obituary
Roy L. Underwood Jr. (Pastor), as know was “Leroy” was born in Peoria Illinois on September 3rd, 1939. Leroy was born to Guida Laster and Roy L. Underwood Sr. (both deceased). He grew up in Peoria Ill and later joined the Navy at the young age of 17; it was during this military journey that landed him in San Diego where he met the love of his life Doris Underwood of 56 years. Leroy was a two time retiree serving 20 years in the Navy and 20 years working for North Island Naval Air Station. Leroy went on to Pastor the Chapel of Deliverance, Church of San Diego for 20+ more years until he was called home on the morning of September 26th, 2018 surround by his loving family. Leroy was a loving and devoted family man, husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. Pastor Underwood was very active in his church and loved his congregation, he would constantly ask, “ is everyone ok? Does anyone have anything to get off their chest?” He would remind the church family that, “there was no big I’s and little you’s, it’s level at the cross.” Pastor loved life and genuinely loved God, as well as his fellowman. He made those he knew and met for the first time feel as though they were #1. Pastor hardly made anyone feel as though they were strangers, he greeted you with a warm, “hey, how are you doing?” as though you were old lifetime friends. Leroy is known for his joking around, love for making people laugh, telling old war stories, Navy life and family tales of growing up in Peoria with his family and friends. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. Roy was preceded in death by his mother Guida Laster and father Roy Underwood Sr., brother Robert Underwood (Jean), brother Russell T. Underwood (Jean deceased) and Johnny Underwood. He leaves to mourn his wife Doris Underwood of San Diego, two daughters Karen Underwood and Angela Horton both of San Diego. Three sisters: Phyllis Hayes (Jim) of Peoria Ill., Myra Thompson (Don) of St. Louis Missouri, Juanita Stewart (Leo Deceased) of E. St. Louis Ill., 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren as well of a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
