Soteria Angeles' Obituary
Soteria (“Bunny”) Angeles
April 1, 1929 – July 4, 2023
Soteria Angeles passed away peacefully at Lakeview Sharp Hospice Care after 3 months of various health issues. She was a native San Diegan and had spent her entire life in the San Diego area.
Soteria’s parents, Stellianos and Kalliopi, came from Kimi, Greece, first going to Livingston, Illinois in 1916 and then to San Diego, CA in the early 1920s. Soteria (“Bunny”) was born on Monday April 1, 1929 (April Fool’s Day) but acquired the nickname “Bunny” because for that year, the previous day was Easter Sunday. She was the youngest of 6 siblings. Her family lived on 10th Avenue near Robinson in the Hillcrest area, then on Cleveland Avenue in 1935, and then on Vermont Street from 1946 to 1976. Her father Stellianos had passed away in 1933, and growing up through the Great Depression and WWII gave her many strong life experiences and survival skills. In 1947 at San Diego High School, she participated in the Welcoming Committee, the All-School Show, and the Bible Club. From the 1940s through the 1950s, all her older siblings got married and moved away, while Bunny remained to live with (and take care of) her mom Kalliopi (who passed away in 1980).
Beginning in 1956, Bunny worked in downtown San Diego for a title insurance company. She never married, never had children, and never learned to drive a car. Her skills as a pedestrian and a veteran bus passenger gave her a great opportunity to be very familiar with many districts in the San Diego area. When her mom Kalliopi went into a care facility in 1976, Bunny moved to various apartments in the Hillcrest area until finally purchasing a condo in 1988. In 1991, she retired from what was then known as TICOR. She always loved to attend weddings, baptisms, graduations, housewarmings, anniversaries, retirements, and milestone birthdays, and joined my wife and me for many Thanksgivings, Christmases, and Easters. She spent her final 3 months at a skilled nursing facility and then a Hospice House. Bunny was predeceased by her sister Mary (Angeles) Canaris, Katherine (Angeles) Kotitsa, Gus Angeles, Tony Angeles, and James Angeles, and niece Stephanie (Angeles) Navrides and nephew John Angeles. She had a total of 13 nieces and nephews, and with their children and grandchildren (including spouses), she has over 60 living relatives today.
Soteria (“Bunny”) will be laid to rest near two of her brothers in the Anastasis section at Greenwood Memorial Park. Please share a memory of Bunny on the website: www.greenwoodmemorial.com. Plans for a Celebration of Life will be announced on a future date. The Family suggests donations be made in her name to: St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 3655 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92103. May her memory truly be eternal!
