Steve Madrid's Obituary
Steve Madrid was born to Frances and Valentin Madrid on July 28, 1945 in San Diego, California. He was called home to be with the Lord on June 2, 2021. He will be missed by his wife of 50 years, Lola Madrid, as well as his daughters: Christine (William) Gibson, Elizabeth Madrid, Vanessa Madrid; Fur babies Patches and Harley. His Grandchildren are: Zachary McGuire, Lake Montalvo, Scout Montalvo, and Faith Hernandez. His surviving siblings: Frances (Ken) Barker, Mary Holland, and Lupe King; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was a native San Diego resident and graduated from San Diego High School. He started his career in construction at the age of 14 at the San Diego Sand Pit. Before the age of 18 he had learned to operate oversize vehicles and heavy machinery. His construction knowledge bloomed into general contracting. His talents can still be seen today in popular locations like Old Town San Diego and Sycuan.
One of Steve’s true loves was food. He enjoyed indulging in all types, but most of all cooking for others. It was never uncommon to drop in to say hello and leave so full a nap was a must. He believed food shared with family and friends was truly food for the soul.
His talent and creativity with wood could not be left out. He was known by many as Grandpa Madrid or Uncle Steve. He created doll furniture, children’s furniture, hand carved pacific islander seal, anything you needed he was sure to exceed your expectation.
There would be no way around not mentioning his second family PIFA (Pacific Islander Festival Association). His love and dedication to PIFA was obvious through the years. He saw it more than just volunteering for an organization but a true second family. Steve believed in the importance of preservation of family and culture therefore dedicated several years to making PIFA thrive. Logistics will never be the same without him in his yellow cart driving around the venue.
He will be missed dearly.
