Steven M. Schmitt's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Steven Michael Schmitt, a beloved husband, father, son, and friend, who ascended from this world on August 7, 2025, at the age of 73.
Steve was born on January 24, 1952, to Bill and Billie Schmitt, while his family was stationed in Topeka, Kansas. His family's roots are in the heart of Texas, although during his early childhood, his family traveled to several different Air Force bases.
Steve later attended Concordia University in Nebraska, where he met the love of his life, Margaret (Jaeger) Schmitt. After graduation, they married in Seward, Nebraska on August 7, 1976. This eventually brought him to the beautiful shores of San Diego, California, the hometown of his wife, where they faithfully raised their four children and he spent his final days.
Steve was a passionate educator, dedicating his life to shaping the hearts and minds of the next generation as a science teacher. His commitment to education was not just a profession; it was a calling. Steve was known for his love of storytelling, comprehensive communication, and vast knowledge of random trivia facts. He believed in the power of knowledge, and nurtured his students with patience, kindness, and unwavering support. Many of those he taught remember him not only for his lessons, but for the compassion he showed and the inspiration he provided.
Beyond his role as an educator, Steve was a devoted follower of Christ. His faith guided him in all aspects of his life, instilling values of love, integrity, and service to others. He also enjoyed playing the guitar and leading worship. He found joy in sharing his beliefs, and his spiritual life was richly woven into the fabric of his daily practices.
Steve was a proud father to his four children: Charity, Jonathan, Katherine and Matthew. He treasured his role as a father and took great pride in his children’s accomplishments. Each child continues to carry a piece of his legacy and his love for them. Family gatherings were a source of joy for Steve, where laughter and love filled the air, creating lasting memories that will be held dear by all who knew him.
Steve had a variety of hobbies and interests that he enjoyed. He was an avid fan of Sci-Fi shows, such as Star Trek and Dr Who, and was well-known for his slapstick humor and indulgence of comedy, including Monty Python and Weird Al.
With a zest for life, he loved to connect with others. Whether it was through teaching from the Bible, engaging in deep conversations, or enjoying the simple pleasures of life, Steve embraced every relationship with an open heart.
Now his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him. His kindness, wisdom, and authentic faith will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
He is preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his mother Billie, his brother Gary, and nephews Joey and Sam. He is survived by his father Bill, his brother Ricky, and his children: Charity, Jonathan, Katherine, and Matthew. Also his grandchildren: Daniel, Elizabeth, Lydia, Bella, Grace, Brighton, Benjamin, Jacob, Britt, Brooklyn, and Kinsley, and great-grandchild Atlas. Along with nieces, nephews and many in-laws, who are committed to cherishing his memory and honoring his legacy.
