Sylvia Tennyson Hoskins' Obituary
Sylvia Tennyson Hoskins-1921-2023 Sylvia was born January 11, 1921 in San Francisco, CA. She was the middle daughter of Eric and Rita Draper. In 1929, she moved to San Diego with her parents and two sisters to follow her father’s travel agency. At age 8, she entered the 5th grade at Grant Elementary. Sylvia graduated from San Diego High shortly after her 16th birthday. It took her somewhat longer to graduate from San Diego State University as she took time away to marry and raise a family. Sylvia married Lawrence E. Hoskins on October 6, 1940 in Balboa Park at Saint Francis Chapel. They had three children, Carole, Lawrence, and John. She and Lawrence were married for 66 years until his death on January 22, 2007. With her B.A. in Health Education & Journalism, she began her career in Health Ed at Mercy Hospital. A member of the Board of Directors, American Cancer Society, 1953-1969, Sylvia was then hired as Project Coordinator for the Education/Clinic Program. Her career at ACS progressed through many promotions until her retirement as Associate Executive Director some 18 years later. In addition to her work with the American Cancer Society, Sylvia was a member of various community organizations, including CUIDAR, Children’s Dental Health Association, Historical Society, Opera Association, and the Zoological Society of San Diego, The United Way, March of Dimes, Neighborhood House Assoc., National Federation of Settlements & Neighborhood Centers, San Diego County-Wide District PTA and the Mayor’s Council on Youth Opportunity, who in turn gave her a key to the city! Further, in 1979, Sylvia was recognized “Dama de Distinction” by the Mexican-American Foundation for her work in the community. Her hobbies included gardening and antiques, although her favorite past time was spending time with her 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She enjoyed throwing parties for family and friends and was a fabulous hostess! It’s amazing to think of how many historic events she lived through in 102 1/2 years on this earth. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her children, Carole Richards; Larry Hoskins; and John (Emma) Hoskins. Grandchildren, Laurie (Mike) Hoffman; David Erickson; and Richard Hoskins. Great-grandchildren Elizabeth (Cam) Austin, Matthew Hoffman, Charles Hoffman, and Aleah Erickson. Great-great granddaughter, Eleanora Joy Austin. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews
