Tommie Nelson Harper's Obituary
Tommie N. Harper was born on March 29th, 1936, from the union of Norris Harper and Louise Richmond. They lived in rural Jefferson, Texas. At an early age, Tommie attended and joined Judea Baptist Church. He went to grade school at Judea High. As a young man, the family moved to Houston, Texas. Tommie graduated High School and immediately join the U.S. Navy afterward. Where he served 25 years.
Tommie began his Naval Career overseas, with a tour of duty in Guam. He
returned to States. He was stationed at NAS Lemoore, CA, and then San Diego for training on the USS Ranger and USS Nimitz. It was in San Diego through a good friend he met his wife (Helen).
Tommie married Helen one year later. He joined New Hope Friendship
Missionary Baptist Church and became an active member. Brother Harper participated in the Men’s choir, Food Bank ministry and attended noonday
Bible Study. He also was active in Sunday School classes, where he learned the meaning of Christian Love and Understanding.
After his naval career, Tommie worked in the Laundry at the VA Hospital. Tommie attended college at night. He received a degree in Industrial
Supervision. Once he received his degree, he was promoted to Laundry Plant Manager at the VA Hospital. Then he transferred to NAS Miramar Brig after working at the VA Hospital. He retired and spent his later years at home with his lovely wife and family.
He is proceeded in death by his mother Louise Richmond, his father Norris Harper, his stepdad Don Richmond, daughter Mary Tillman and son Donald Ray Harper. He is survived by his wife Helen Harper, His daughters: Denise L. Harper, Debra Hollins (husband Derrick), Her daughters: Pamela J. Grayson (husband David), Janice F. Sullivan (husband Joseph,) Linda J. Burton, Cynthia D. Johnson, Her sons: Ronald Monroe (wife Bertha), Michael W. Monroe (wife Cynthia), Stanley Monroe, Ralph C. Burton (wife Dorthy), Robert J.
