Ulysses Proctor
June 10, 1938 – April 8, 2021
Ulysses Proctor, 82, aka ‘Joe Proctor,’ passed into his eternal rest on Thursday, April 8th, 2021.
He was the son of the late John Andrew Proctor and Adrian Battle (née Hollingsworth). Ulysses was baptized in Savannah, Georgia at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church.
Ulysses was educated at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School and Woodville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on August 26th, 1960 and married Louise Todd from New York on October 15th, 1962. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Ulysses enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps four days later, on March 8th, 1965. He served honorably and retired from the Corps on August 31st, 1980 as a First Sergeant.
Ulysses continued his service to country by joining the U.S. Customs Service on September 15th, 1980. He served in many capacities, including Senior Customs Inspector at the San Ysidro/Otay Mesa Ports of Entry. He retired with distinction on November 1st, 2000.
He was an active member of St. Charles Catholic Church (San Diego, CA) until his family joined Corpus Christi Catholic Church (Bonita, CA) in 2015.
As an active practitioner of the Catholic faith, Ulysses joined the Knights of Columbus during the fall of 1977 and subsequently earned the rank of 4th Degree Member. His membership included Assumption Council 3368 and St. Charles Council 7903 in San Diego. He was a Past President of San Diego Diocese Chapter, Former 89th District Deputy, Past Grand Knight, and Past Faithful Navigator. He was an Honorary Life Member of Corpus Christi Council 9065 in Bonita and Ferdinand Magellan Assembly 2063 in Chula Vista. As a member of the Ferdinand Magellan Assembly 2063, he served as a Faithful Trustee and Color Corps Commander.
Ulysses was preceded in death by his parents and grandmother, Mrs. Ida Gilbert and five sisters: Adrian Delois Watson, Esterlene P. Scott, Gwendolyn P. Goodman, Lillian E. Noble, and Ida Baker.
Ulysses is survived by his loving wife Louise, daughter Stacy of Portland, OR, sons John (‘Kasia’) of Chula Vista , CA, and Brian (Michelle) of Montclair, VA; three sisters: Olivette Dobbs of Decatur, GA, Margaret Jones (Fred), and DeVera Wiggins (Benjamin), both of Savannah, GA; two brothers: Joe Battle, Jr., and Ronald Battle, both of Savannah, GA; one aunt, Mrs. Ramona Hollingsworth of Bronx, NY; four grandchildren: Madison Proctor and Mara Proctor of Montclair, VA, and Helena Proctor and Jonathan Proctor of Chula Vista, CA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
