Vera Powell Mooring's Obituary
Vera Jo Ann was born November 29, 1942, to the late James and Willamay Kennedy in San Diego, the oldest of four children. She attended Logan Elementary, Gompers Junior HS, Lincoln HS and San Diego State University. Vera began her career as a teacher in physical education. She taught at Morse, Crawford and Serra High Schools. She later became a professor at Southwestern Community College, teaching dance. She choreographed many ensembles for myriad of venues. Vera eventually transitioned to teaching reading, which took her to retirement.
Following in her mother’s foot steps, Vera became a very proud and active member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Sorority. She served in various capacities within her local chapter as well as participated in many regional and national functions. She hoped one of her daughters would continue the legacy, to no avail.
Vera was an avid reader, she was part of a book club with some of her colleagues for several decades. She loved to dance and was often referred to as “the life of the party”. She enjoyed playing cards, scrabble and other word games she learned from her mother as a little girl. Her all time favorite was to bring family and friends together at her house for the holidays. She made her infamous enchiladas and most everyone played cards or other games that brought everyone together. This was a tradition she continued from her father.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Donald W. Mooring. She is survived by her siblings James Kennedy, Beverly Adams and Juanita Brown; her children, daughters Veronica Powell and Michelle Reed, her step-son Sean Mooring (Erica); grandchildren, Mariah Davis (Saleem), Marcelis Reed, Denise Olinga and Noemi Mooring; great grandchild, Aria Davis; and a host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
