GADSON, Vernon Hollowell's Obituary
Oh, Happy Day! On October 7, 1934, Vernon Hollowell Gadson was born in Brinkley, Arkansas, the second of five children to his loving parents, Daniel and Rosetta Gadson. The family later moved to South Bend, Indiana, in 1951, where Vernon receive his formal education before making the decision to serve his country. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving with honor and distinction during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon with two stars and the National Defense Ribbon before receiving an honorable discharge in 1954.
In 1960, Vernon relocated to San Diego, California, where he began a new chapter of his life. He first found work at the renowned San Diego Zoo before embarking on a successful career in construction. A self-taught tradesman, Vernon joined R.E. Hazard Construction Company in 1970, where he honed his skills and built a reputation for hard work, leadership, and camaraderie. Over 35 years, he worked his way up to become a General Superintendent, earning the respect of his peers before retiring in 2007. Known for his warm personality and unwavering work ethic, he affectionately referred to his crew as “Homeboy” or “Homegirl”, terms of endearment that reflected his deep appreciation for those he worked alongside.
Faith played a central role in Vernon’s life. A devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of San Diego, he served under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Whitmill and was ordained as a deacon in January 2002. His dedication to the church was evident in everything he did, whether tending to the church grounds, cleaning the sanctuary, cooking at church picnics, or offering rides to those in need. Vernon found joy in serving others and was always ready to lend a helping hand with a humble and giving spirit.
Beyond his career and faith, Vernon was known for his impeccable sense of style. A sharp dresser, he ensured that everything around him reflected his appreciation for the finer things in life, especially his beloved Cadillacs. He took great pride in keeping his cars spotless and was quick to remind passengers, “clean your feet before getting in!” If one’s attire wasn’t up to his standards, he would humorously remark, “you’re not getting in my car looking like that.” When he wasn’t admiring his cars, Vernon could be found meticulously maintaining his yard ensuring his lawn was lush, green, and meticulously trimmed. His attention to detail and love for order were evident in every aspect of his life.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Pearlie Gadson, his parents, Daniel and Rosetta Gadson, his brother Andrew (Mildred) Gadson, his grandson Darris Walker, and stepson Freddy Cunningham.
