Born Sue Alice Skipper on November 26, 1940 in Breaux Bridge, LA to the late Andrew and Beatrice Skipper. She moved with her family to Brawley, CA from Breaux Bridge, LA when she was twelve years old. In 1959, she met
Richard Dale Hawkins while visiting San Diego, CA. Shortly thereafter, they were married making San Diego their permanent home. Sue was a woman of strong work principles at home as well as on the job. She was a caring Certified Nursing Assistant in her early years then transitioned to education where she was a loyal employee of San Diego City Schools as a Teacher’s Aid for 20 plus years until her retirement.
She was the eldest daughter of nine children which led her to become a nurturing care giver early on as she helped her mother Beatrice with the supervision of her younger brothers and sisters. She was always busy especially helping others. Her home was opened many times to family and friends. It can be said of Sue Alice she was consistently there when you needed her – be it a ride, a shoulder to cry on, or a listening ear. She loved music, playing cards, gardening, and cooking her favorites: greens, sweet potato pie, and pineapple upside cake. Sue remembered everyone’s birthday including the year, and always greeted you with a smile and hug. She had an uncanny sense of humor with her unique ability to use words out of context guaranteeing a conversation with her would bring laughter your way.
Sue leaves to cherish her life one precious daughter Rhonda Moten and son in law,
Ronald Moten, Sr. They have three children who know her as Grammie. Noell Cain, her husband Chris, and their son Leo (her first great grandchild) of San Diego, CA; Ronald Moten, Jr of San Diego, CA; and Aleah Moten of
San Diego, CA.
Siblings Lynn Rogers, Jean Bell, James Skipper, Geraldine Harris, Diane Adams, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. We all loved her very much and she will truly be missed.
