I only l met Ardell a couple times, but she was always a delight! A fellow pianist, she was always very supportive and encouraging me to play, even though I'm a busy mom of three boys. I loved her spirit, musicality, warmth and resilience. In August 2014, while visting Ardell's cousin, Esther Wallace (my mother-in-law), several of us decided to do a write-up of her life story and suggest it as a human interest piece to the CW6, the CW Network San Diego affiliate. CW6 missed out when they didn't follow up; here's the story, along with a clip of Ardell playing the music she loved: Friends and family will gather on November 15 to celebrate the birthday of longtime San Diego resident, Ardell Krueger. As she approaches her 99th birthday, Ardell is still active as a professional musician, leading the Senior Songsters, a choir whose members hail from the Mira Mesa Senior Center, which performs several times a year at senior care homes, as well as the Braille Institute. Ardell was instrumental in bringing the Senior Center to Mira Mesa and served on its board for many years. Ardell was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and began playing the piano at the age of six. She was accomplished enough to win a scholarship to study at Julliard School of Music; tragically, her mother was diagnosed with cancer and Ardell, like so many women of her era, postponed her musical career to care for her mom. During the next several decades, in addition to being married for over 50 years and raising a son (Ardon), Ardell taught piano lessons, was the organist for several churches in Southern California, and performed at over 1,000 weddings (often at the Catamaran Hotel) and at various business and social events. Attached is an iPhone clip from August 27 of Ardell practicing some "Name That Tune" selections for an upcoming gig at the Mira Mesa Senior Center. As you can see, despite minor arthritis and being told after breaking her wrist in 2010 that she would never play again, Ardell continues to be an accomplished musician and performer. Ardell is 98 going on 28 in her approach to her music and living life to its fullest. As a 40 year resident of San Diego, her story is inspiring to not only the San Diego 6 audience, but to young and old everywhere as an example of the vitality of seniors today. ~Chela Wallace & Family
