Arlene J. Johnson's Obituary
Arlene Johnson, 87 from Oceanside, California, went to be with our lord on March 16, 2019. She grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin and was born on June 6, 1931. She will be joining her mom and dad, Emmett E. Apel and Florence Ida Nuernberg. She was survived and will be dearly missed by Cheryl Turner and Victoria Johnson, her daughters, Chad Day, Brad Day, Nick DeLuca and Dominic DeLuca, her grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. She grew up in Wisconsin and moved to San Diego in 1953. She loved to dance, and could sway on the dance floor gracefully. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and taught her grandsons’ to play Canasta and great grandson to play War. Her favorite trip was to Laughlin, Nevada. In her past time, she would lovingly crochet aprons and Fashionable Shields. She was a long time employee of North Island Naval Air Station as a data processor, and owned and operated a beauty salon downtown San Diego prior to that. She started the first ride share, car pool, initially from El Cajon to North Island, for North Island Naval Air Station. Another contribution to the community was that she developed a community garden in El Cajon next to Magnolia Elementary School. She was currently residing in the Oceana Community, in Oceanside, California. Arlene Johnson was also a loving Aunt to Kathleen McKenna, her eldest bother Clifford Apels Daughter. She is survived by myself, my sons, Timothy McKenna and Thomas Mckenna and their wife’s, Monica McKenna and Rebecca McKenna, as well as was a Great Aunt to their three children, my grandchildren. Arlene was my surrogate mother and quided me thru many life changing decisions, as well as offered me shelter when I needed it. I moved from California for many years and only was able to see her a few times until I decided to move back to California. She was one of the main reasons why I moved back. I was so fortunate to have spent the last 5 years back in her life and will miss her more than anyone can imagine! My Granddaughter, Kali living in Atlanta Ga. only met Aunt Arlene once this summer but felt such a love for her that when I notified her of Arlene’s passing she wrote me back with these words: “I am so Sorry! I’m sending all my love up to her right now! “ She will be missed by all.Friends and family: On Friday, March 29, 2019, from 11:00-1:00 pm, please join us for a celebration of Arlene’s life at Greenwood Memorial Mortuary for a funeral service in the Salli Lynn Chapel (located at Greenwood). Viewing will be available at 10:00 am prior to the services.Additionally, prior to the funeral services, a viewing will also be available on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm in the Salli Lynn Chapel. A reception will follow at Nick’s house: 1205 Sunbright Dr., Oceanside, CA 92057.She regularly attended Faith Lutheran Church where a local memorial service will be held April 13, 2019, at 12:00 pm, with Pastor Michael Hall.
