Carl David Lowenstein's Obituary
Carl Lowenstein died peacefully at his home in San Diego on November 16, 2015. At his request, no services will be held.Carl was born in New York City in 1934. He was a graduate of Kent State University. Dr. Lowenstein received a PhD in Applied Physics from Harvard University in 1963. He came to San Diego in 1964 to work at the Marine Physical Laboratory of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. There he met Claudia, who became his wife a year later.During the course of his career he worked with towed instrumented devices that used sonar. Projects included fine-scale mapping of the sea floor and locating manganese nodules on the bottom of the ocean. At one time he participated in an (unsuccessful) search for the Titanic, which is recounted in the book “Beyond Reach: The Search for the Titanic” by Hoffman and Grimm.Carl enjoyed camping with his family, vacationing across the western US and Hawaii. He has also been a lifelong computer enthusiast.After retirement Carl became active in computer groups, most recently K-PLUG (Kernel Panic Linux Users Group). He was also an avid collector of slide rules and puzzles.He and Claudia took several trips in later years to Europe, Alaska, the Sea of Cortez and Panama / Costa Rica.Carl and Claudia were married for 50 years. In addition to Claudia, he is survived by his daughter Joanna and sons David and Matt, as well as his brothers Michael and Albert, 2 grandsons, and 3 great-grandchildren.In lieu of flowers, donations to Scripps Institution of Oceanography Collection Fund or Undergraduate Student Scholarships would be appreciated.
