Cristeta Yuching Tan's Obituary
On Monday, June 27, 2022, Cristeta Yuching Tan, 87, wife of the late John Eteck Chua Tan of San Diego passed away peacefully in San Diego, California.
Born October 28, 1934, in Naga City, Philippines, Cristeta (known as Tita to her family
and friends) was the second daughter of the late Antonio Yuching and the late Herminia
Ocampo Yuching. She graduated from the University of the East in Manila, Philippines
with a degree in Business Accounting in 1958 and passed the CPA board in the same
year. Early in her career, Cristeta joined Equitable Corporation in Manila as Head of
Human Resources. She also taught Accounting at the Manuel L. Quezon University. At
Equitable Corporation, Cristeta met her future husband John Eteck and the two later
wed on August 5, 1961. In 1972, John and Cristeta moved their young family
to Cagayan de Oro City for new opportunities, with Cristeta accepting the role of
general manager of Secured Bank, a newly established bank. She was also active with the
Girl Scout Organization in Cagayan de Oro City and was appointed as Treasurer of the
organization.
Cristeta was a thoughtful and engaging person. She would sparkle and smile when she
was able to help or connect with others. Cristeta was also known for her keen eye for
details and determination. She was diligent and loved to work. After moving to the USA
in the late 1970s, she returned to accounting and worked for an apartment leasing
office, an insurance company and finally the San Diego County Assessor’s office until
her retirement in 2009. Cristeta loved bargain hunting, especially estate sales. She loved
fine dining and would often use her detailed skills to reproduce dishes we had in the
restaurant. It was a tough job cooking for 5 growing kids, so her kids often shared
cooking duties with Cristeta but the family loved Cristeta’s food the best. Cristeta was
also the core of our family and as her kids, we would often go to her for her insightful
advice and feedback.
Cristeta is survived by her five children, John Anthony Tan and his wife, Vivian Lee
Tan, MD, John Alexander Tan and his wife, Donna Boissiere, John Alfred Tan and his
wife Dandan Pan, Joan Caroline Pryce and her husband, Steven Pryce, and John Alan
Tan, as well as 6 grandchildren: Anthony Christian Tan PharmD, Aidan, Aron Christopher,
Liam, Nathan, and Claudia. She is also survived by her sisters, Remedios Yuching and
Herminia Moscoso and her husband Felizardo, along with many nieces and nephews
and their families. She was predeceased by her husband John Eteck, her brothers
Gabriel Yuching and Antonio Yuching, and her sister, Milagros Quini, MD.
