Faye M. Jackson's Obituary
Faye Margret Jackson was born in Columbia, Missouri on September 1, 1936, to Christine Tibbs and Ellis James Tibbs.
At a young age, Faye accepted Christ into her life and was baptized at Second Baptist Church in Columbia, MO.
Along with keeping up with her academics, Faye was very active in high school. She played 1st clarinet in the band, sang in the choir, was part of the majorette team, enjoyed playing tennis and bowling, was on the student council, and was the homecoming queen. She graduated from Douglas High School in 1954 and attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO.
In 1955, Faye married Harold Irving Jackson, also from Columbia, Missouri, and they moved to Hawaii where he was stationed in the U.S. Marines Corps. From that union, she was blessed with two beautiful children, Valerye and Darryl.
The family moved to San Diego in 1958 and to Queens, New York in 1964. In 1967, Faye moved back to California and made San Diego her permanent home. Being an avid football aficionado, Faye quickly became a devoted San Diego Chargers fan. She was a season ticket holder for over 30 years until they moved out of San Diego, which she was not happy about! Throughout the years, Faye always opened her doors to her friends. She enjoyed hanging out, playing cards and board games, socializing, and being anywhere the fun was happening!
Faye had a very rewarding career working for the Legal Aid Society of San Diego for over 35 years, retiring at the age of 72. She started as an Administrative Secretary and worked her way up to Administrative Paralegal. Faye spoke fondly of the attorneys she had the privilege of working with and truly appreciated how much they cared for those needing assistance. She enjoyed providing services to those in need and loved assisting people with their unemployment claims.
She once said, “I did whatever I had to, whether that meant going before the Administrative Law Judge or an appeal letter off to Sacramento. I would take the case as far as was necessary to win it!”
Faye was passionate about social justice and was very involved in many organizations that uplifted the Black community. She served on the Neighborhood House Board of Directors for close to twenty years and for the Head Start Policy Board where she represented San Diego as a Delegate to the National Head Start Convention in Haiti and Puerto Rico. Faye was also actively involved in raising funds in her hometown and with the United Negro College Fund to help support young Black youth in their endeavors to attend college.
Faye was well-traveled and enjoyed taking trips with her friends to places such as Greece, Nigeria, the Caribbean, Aruba, Bali, Rome, Paris, France, Alaska, and Washington DC to see the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Her infamous collection of magnets from all
over the world documented all the places she visited and kept her refrigerator highly decorated.
Faye was a devoted member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church since joining in 1968. She served as the Vice Chair on the Board of Trustees for the last several years and was a member of the Hospitality Committee.
Faye entered into eternal rest on December 13, 2023. She was preceded in death by her loving father Ellis James Tibbs, mother Christine Tibbs (Kelly), and brother Ralph Tibbs. She is survived by her daughter Valerye F. Miller, son Darryl I. Jackson (Sherry D. Jackson), granddaughters Arolon F. Miller and Briahna C. Jackson, grandson Tyler I. Jackson, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
