Dr. Frank Carver epitomized a life well lived. He will be missed but I am grateful for knowing him. He taught a class in which I was enrolled at Point Loma in the mid-1970s. I recall his high expectations and gentle spirit, as well as his passion for what he taught. But, in the late 1990s, our lives intersected even more meaningfully for me. I was the VP responsible for leading the Student Development programs and services at Eastern Nazarene College. Frank and Betty moved on campus while he served as the Interim Chair of the Religion Dept (I may be a bit fuzzy on the details of his title) in a year when several vacancies occurred. While he clearly played a significant role in the Religion Dept, he and Betty were also a gift to campus life — for students, faculty, staff, and community members alike. Their regular presence in the dining hall where they shared tables with students, chapel where they modeled a healthy relationship, campus church where they were regulars, and at athletic events were an important influence on our community for the year they were among us. Frank’s willingness to come out of retirement to serve a sister institution and his denomination was a tribute to his servant’s heart. Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Much love and prayers for Betty, Carol, Mark, and other family and friends.
