Robert Harrington
Dear Herb Hom family.. I'm Bob Harrington and I met Herb (we called him Herbie affectionately) almost 50 years ago when I opened my fruit store in La Jolla. I think around 1977. I was a customer of David Produce Company. Now 50 years later my small store has turned into a successful fruit and vegetable wholesale business. I want to share a couple memories and thoughts I've carried with me these past many years. I often would go to 6th street early in the morning around 4am to pick up some things for my market. One early morning I arrived to see Herbie on his knees in a tee shirt sorting mangoes. There were a group of men working along with Herbie but no-one was working like him. He was a machine. That scene has never left my memory. But the most import part of this story is how Herbie and the people at David Produce helped me through my most difficult period. Being in my early 20's and inexperienced I fumbled and found myself in debt. A lot of debt to David Produce. The Hom family and particularly Herbie always treated me with respect and kindness as I worked through a difficult time. I have never forgotten.
