Herbert Hoover Hom's Obituary
Herb was born on June 20, 1930 in San Diego, California. He was the fifth of 12 children, with eight brothers and three sisters. He was 13 years old when his father died, so he and his older brothers had to take over David Produce, the family’s wholesale produce business. After graduating from San Diego High, he was drafted into the Army and fought on the front lines of the Korean War. He was wounded, awarded a Purple Heart, and honorably discharged as a Corporal at 22 years old.
Once home, Herb began working full-time at the produce which involved 3 a.m. mornings and 12 hour days. He starting dating Deanna in 1957, and on September 3, 1960 they were the first couple to be married at the Chinese Community Church on 47th Street. Over the next nine years, they would welcome their four children. Herb enjoyed playing tennis and golf, snow skiing, camping, and fishing.
Herb retired from the produce at 67 years old, after which he and Deanna traveled the world with friends, played as much golf as possible, cruised, and took lots of trips with the large Herb Hom family. They were actively involved in Chinese Community Church, and Herb enjoyed being a part of the Kitchen Ministry. His biggest passion was spending time with his family.
Herb was a dependable and steady man, with a genuine soul and an easygoing heart. Life for him was simple and good, especially when surrounded by family and friends. He left a legacy showing how to treat others with kindness, to be humble and grateful in all things, and to add smiles, laughter, and fun everyday.
He is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, 4 children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
Herb’s final resting place will be at the Miramar National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herb’s honor to the Chinese Community Church.
