Samuel James Major's Obituary
Captain Samuel James Major, Jr. passed away on March 9, 2017. He was born on January 16, 1945 in Evansville, IN to Mary Elizabeth Major and Captain Samuel James Major, Sr.. His father was a Naval Supply officer and brought his family to numerous duty stations including a stint in Paris, where Sam attended the American High School. Sam went to undergraduate school at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. An avid basketball fan, this was a dream come true. Sam was an ROTC student and went on several midshipman cruises during his time at UNC Chapel Hill. Following in his father’s footsteps and after graduation, Sam was commissioned as a U.S. Navy officer. As a Supply Officer, Sam had numerous deployments, including Vietnam, the Navy Sea Bees, US Central Command, USS Niagra Falls, Oakland Naval Supply Center, and the Naval Transportation Management School. Sam was offered the opportunity to study at Michigan State University and obtained his MBA there. Additionally he studied at USC.Sam was one of the kindest souls and was friendly with almost everyone he came into contact with. He continued to be a big fan of college basketball throughout his life (go Tarheels and Spartans!). Sam is survived by his daughter, Nicole Major Wallace, his son, Peter Major, his son-in-law, Darren Wallace, his granddaughter, Chloe Wallace, his sister, Lisa Major, and nephews, Ryan and Sean Murphy.Visitation will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary (4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113) on Tuesday, March 21 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m..
