Dear Andy, Daun, Roger, Anita, Rodney and all the Grandkids, So sorry to hear of Vernita's passing. She was a great lady that always had a smile in her voice and a contagious laugh. The first time I met her was at the Santee High School, and was introduced by Waldo to her as the big V. She was the Worthington matriarch. Andy, glad that you came into Vernita's life and that you were able to spend so many memorable years together. You both always invited me and Waldo into your home, and made us feel welcome. I always looked forward to the cabbage rolls at xmas. and the yummy desserts. Andy and Vernita's laughter always filled the room, and you could feel the warmth that they generated. I am so glad that we kept in touch over the years, even if only a xmas card. I knew that she did not feel well, and my last xmas card I said "They can not make it to tough for us", and she was one strong lady. She will always be in our hearts. My memories of Vernita….so many over so many years: She was so generous of heart, always wanting to feed you, send garden produce home with you, open her home to you. I admired her so much and hope that I will grow to be as selfless a person as I believe she was. I remember so many afternoons after school being at the house with Anita, playing cards on the floor, hanging out, giggling and gabbing, and she always made me feel like she was happy to see me even though she probably wondered why I was always there! I remember Christmas Eve's with all the family there and how she loved that. All through the 40 years of my friendship with her daughter, she was a constant. I always felt Anita was so lucky to have her as a mom. I mean, come on! What mother lets her kid have a horse that's kept down the street in the sand pits of the local riverbed? Only the VERY BEST! I will miss her and will keep the family in my prayers for comfort and peace. Kimi

When I was in high school, Vernita was my second mom. She always welcomed me into her home, and I spent hours and hours there – eating, sleeping, getting into trouble, but mostly laughing. I wasn?t special, Vernita was generous and welcoming to everyone. Through her, I learned how to appreciate country music and how to bet at the horse races. At once Vernita was fun and caring; always a joy to be with. To this day I hear her laugh and see her smile – her spirit is a part of me. The world will miss her, and the world is a better place because of her.

I wept when I heard of Vernita's passing, for I knew that the world had lost an incredibly kind, loving and generous human being. From the moment I met Vernita, I knew that she was unique. She had an incredible gift of making other people feel special and valued. Whenever Vernita and Andy came to our home, our dogs would leap around in joy. Even our newly-adopted dog, who didn't do well with strangers, knew immediately that Vernita was no stranger! She recognized that Vernita was a treasured friend, worthy of love and devotion. The feeling was palpable and real. Vernita encouraged my growing interest in gardening and I loved hearing about how she tended her vegetable and flower gardens. She generously shared her delicious bounty with us. One of my favorite memories of Vernita is when she invited me to her home to have me pick the first tomato of the season! She was excited to share this event with me and I treasure the memory. That was just one example in a lifetime of examples that demonstrated Vernita's love and inclusion of others. I know that Vernita's spirit lives on in so many ways: in her daughters' smiles and generosity, in the arc of a rainbow after a spring shower, in the shoots of the new life springing up from the fertile soil. I will do my best to follow Vernita's example of tending the soil of my life by spreading love abundantly. And to see those around me blossom, as Vernita did. Thank you, Vernita, for giving me the gift of knowing, loving and learning from you. You will never be forgotten.

The Vernita whom I knew was always welcoming, with a sincere smile and infectious laugh when something struck her as funny. On the same visit, she might let you know exactly what she thought of a situation that wasn?t right, and you knew that she was no pushover. She knew a lot about people, probably a result of her extensive retail experience. It?s hard to get to know a stepmom very well if you?re already an adult, and you live some distance away. The once or twice-a-year visits just don?t allow you to get that close. But you can tell a lot about someone by the effect she has on other people. And I could see that my dad was really happy being married to Vernita. That?s why I loved her. I will be forever grateful to Vernita and her kids for the genuine love and care they?ve had, all these years, for my dad. Twenty-some years ago, after meeting my dad and Vernita for the first time, my wife Janet observed that they seemed an ideal match. Vernita was obviously so good for him (??..and, by the way, she had him completely figured out). Although I will miss her, I hold out the hope that ?absent from the body, she is present with Jesus Christ?, and that we will see her again. God Bless her. Mark Kiddie.
